Which boilers are to be registered? / which steam generating equipments are required to be registered?
Such boilers having volumetric capacity 25 liters or more. Pressure of the steam generated is not less than 1 kg/cm2 or temperature of the water is 100°c or more.
How to register a boiler?
Application requesting for registration of the boiler should be submitted to The Director of Steam Boilers, Maharashtra State, Mumbai, along with the particulars of the boiler furnished in the ‘Forms’ as per Indian Boiler Regulations, 1950
and the prescribed fees.
What is Boiler’s Act?
The Act is titled as "The Boilers Act, 1923”. The Central Government has extended the Act to all the States and Union Territories of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir for the purpose of manufacturing of boiler, use of boiler, Indian
Boiler Regulations, 1950 is made as per the provision in the Act.
Which boilers do not require boiler attendants, to be incharge?
As per Chapter XIV of Indian Boiler Regulations, 1950, coil type boilers having volumetric capacity up to 150 liters and operating up to 12 kg/cm2 pressure, as well as Shell type boilers having volumetric capacity up to 500 liters
and operating up to 7 kg/cm2 pressure, need not be operated by persons holding boiler attendant certificate. However the operator for these boilers shall passed Xth Standard / (S.S.C.) or equivalent.
What is the difference between a hot water generator and a steam generator and which of the equipment requires registration under the Act?
Where water is heated to a temperature below 100 degree Centigrade, such equipment is a hot water generator and do not require any registration. However when the temperature of water exceeds 100 degree Centigrade the equipment is a steam generator
and it either requires to be registered as per Indian Boilers, Act 1923 and Indian Boiler Regulations, 1950 or a no-objection certificate should be obtained from the Directorate Steam Boilers.
What is bare inspection and how it is done?
When the insulation and lagging covering the parts of the boiler are removed and the parts are exposed / open for the purpose of inspection, such inspection may be called as bare inspection. Such inspection shall be carried out after ten years
from the manufacture and after every ten years subsequently.
What is remnant Life assessment study?
In case of Shell type boilers, when the age of the boiler exceeds 25 years, the working pressure is reduced by such percentage as given in the chart in regulation 391-A (a)(i) and (ii) of Indian Boiler Regulations 1950.
In case of water tube boilers operating at a temperature 400°c and above and are in operation for 1, 00, 000 hours, such boilers are to be tested as per Table-I of regulation 391-A (b)(ii) and all other water tube boilers, that have completed
25 years of age are to be tested by non-destructive tests as given in Table-II of the above regulation.
Who conducts the Boiler Attendants and Boiler Operation Engineers examinations and what are its requirements?
The above examinations are conducted by this Directorate, under the Boiler Attendants Rules, 2011 and Boiler Operation Engineer Rules, 2011. The details of the requirements are available on the Website of this Directorate.
How many times in a year, when and where the Boiler Attendant and Boiler Operation Engineer examinations are conducted?
The Boiler Operation Engineer examinations are conducted twice in a year at Mumbai in the month of May and December. Boiler Attendant examinations are conducted five times in a year, out of which three times in the months of February, June
and October at Mumbai and two times in the months of March and September at Nagpur.
Where is Welder’s Qualification tests carried out?
Welder’s qualification tests are carried out in any approved testing Laboratory like Mettalurgical Services, Ghatkopar, National Test House, Andheri, Mumbai, National Test House, Kolkotta and Welding Research Institute, Tiruchirapalli.

Where can pressure gauges be tested and how much fee is charged?
Pressure gauges can be tested at office of the Director of Steam Boilers, Mumbai and Divisional Office, Pune. Fee charged for testing is र 50/- per gauge.
How much fee is charged for Duplicate Certificate of a boiler?
Fee charged for issue of duplicate copy of certificate of boiler is र 50/- per copy.
Is there any provision for inspection of boilers on urgent basis on Sunday, holiday or after sunset?
There is a provision for inspection at special times and out of season in Rule 16 and 43 of Maharashtra Boiler Rules, 1962, under which special visit can be fixed during a Sunday, a holiday or even in hours of sunset with specific orders from
the Director. However extra fee will be charged for the purpose.
What is the procedure for seeking approval by a firm to manufacture boilers?
For the purpose of seeking approval for manufacturing various items, firm may apply directly to the Director of Steam Boilers, on payment of the prescribed fee.
